General Motors has released drawings of a touch screen steering wheel as recently as 2021, but it hasn’t yet progressed past that stage. That’s because the manufacturers would need to determine the material needed for the wheel, how best they can make it cost-effective and how they can ensure that it’s safe for drivers in the event of a crash. That could still take a few years, as it’s far more important to get it right before releasing this bit of new car technology.
But with how technology keeps improving by leaps and bounds, customers can rest assured that if the technology becomes both safe to use and desired by consumers, it’s going to find its way into automobiles. Touch screens have already proven popular in the center console of most vehicles, and it’s hardly a stretch to think that newer drivers would want to have the same technology at their fingertips with a touch screen steering wheel.
