Single-Stage Vs. Two-Stage Air Compressors

If you’re debating between a single-stage and two-stage hydraulic air compressor for service trucks (also known as a dual-stage air compressor), you might be wondering what the difference is between the two. The key distinction is the number of times that air gets compressed between the inlet valve and the tool nozzle. The air is compressed one time in a single-stage compressor and two times in a two-stage compressor for twice the pressure. Therefore, two stage compressors are normally used where higher pressure is required.

  • A single-stage compressor draws air into the low-pressure cylinder with a piston and compresses it just once at roughly 120 psi per stroke. The compressed air is then sent to a storage tank where it is used to power pneumatic tools and other small-scale applications.
  • A two-stage compressor works in the same way, but it has two cylinders for holding compressed air so the compression process is repeated twice. Unlike a single-stage compressor, the air is not transported to a storage tank. Instead, it is sent into a smaller high-pressure cylinder, where a second piston compresses it at approximately 175 psi. From there, the compressed air passes to a storage tank after it has been cooled, where it is reserved for high-pressure applications.

Without a doubt, two-stage air compressors produce higher air power, which makes them the go-to option for large-scale operations and continuous applications. And because two-stage compressors are better able to maintain pressure over extended periods of time and are faster at refilling, they are also more efficient. This means they use less energy to get the job done.
