KX Pack is a family-owned packaging supplier with Chinese roots. Being close to production and trade, and witnessing changing demands from consumers on the market regarding sustainability and the use of plastic packaging, the company is adding a new service line to their business: compostable packaging and containers.

“The meaning of compostable means that a product is able to break down into natural elements in a compost environment. When broken down into its natural elements it causes no harm to the environment. Integrating this kind of products can be a huge step forward for our industry regarding waste”, explains Min Li, founder and CEO.

The compostable breakdown process usually takes about 90 days. The ASTM defines compostables as anything that undergoes degradation by biological processes during composting to yield CO2, water, inorganic compounds and biomass at a rate consistent with other compostable materials and leaves no visible, distinguishable or toxic residue.

To be more specific,  when compostable materials break down, they release valuable nutrients into the soil, aiding the growth of trees and plants. That is why we invested in the development of compostable packaging and containers”, continues Min.

The compostable packaging products from KX PACK have been awarded the mark of “OK Compost Industrial” by TUV. This means the products are industrial compostable.

Bagasse: new raw material for packaging solutions
Bagasse is a fiber made from sugar cane waste: a residual material that remains after the extraction of sugar cane juice. Sugarcane is a tree-free, renewable resource. In the past, sugarcane waste was burned in the field, causing pollution. Now a very good purpose is found for bagasse: that is to use it as a raw material for the manufacture of products such as compostable disposable tableware. It is more sustainable than compostable products made of woods or paper.

Without having to use an industrial composting facility, bagasse products can decompose within 90 days. Depending on the composting conditions, such as temperature, moisture and size, they usually compost even faster. Bagasse disposables are suitable for both hot and cold dishes and are usually microwave and refrigerator safe.

“Our company offers different product lines made from bagasse. Currently we sell trays and plates for fresh fruits and vegetables, trays for fresh meat, boxes, cups , lids and containers for take-away foods and drinks and seedling trays for the horticulture industry. Our products are certified by BRC, BPI and OK Compost Industrial. Finally, we have a warehouse in Belgium, from which we can direct supply and also hold stock,” concludes Min.
