What is prepainted steel?

According to EN 13523-0, a prepainted metal (or coil coated metal) is a ‘metal on which a coating material (e.g. paint, film…) has been applied by coil coating’.

The definition of a coil coating process according to EN-10169:2012-06 is:

‘A method in which an organic coating material is applied on a rolled metal strip in a continuous process.

This process includes cleaning if necessary and chemical pre-treatment of the metal surface and either one side or two side, single or multiple application of (liquid) paints or coating powders which are subsequently cured or laminated with plastic films.’

Coil coating process:

Coil coating process is a continuous, automated process to paint metal before fabrication into end products.

Coil coating lines recieve steel coils from rolling mills and produce coated steel coils ready for shipment in one continuous process.

First the coil is unwound, cleaned and pretreated, applied on a flat continuous sheet.

Then primer paint is applied by direct roll coating and top paint is applied by reverse roll coat in which the painting roll travels in the reverse direction of the steel strip to provide a smoother film with fewer defects which guarantees high quality finishing.

Finally, the strip is cooled and rewound to a coil and packaged for shipment.

Later in factories it is cut to required sizes and formed into finished shapes.

The most of coating lines contain these steps:

• Unwinding the coil to a steel strip.
• Cleaning the strip
• Power brushing
• Pre-treating with chemicals
• Drying the strip
• Applying primer on one or both sides
• Curing (often only 15 to 60 seconds!)
• Cooling the strip
• Top coating on one or both sides
• Second curing
• Cooling down to room temperature
• Rewinding of the coated coil

Coating lines are working at very high speed up to 700 feet per minute.

The steel colors:

Colors are applied to steel according to the RAL codes system which is European color matching system that defines color codes for paint, coatings and plastics.

‘RAL’ is the abbreviation of ‘Reichs-Ausschuß für Lieferbedingungen und Gütesicherung’.

This name can be translated in English as ‘National Commission for Delivery Terms and Quality Assurance’.

RAL codes consist of four digits and define 1625 different colors.

For example: Red hues: from RAL3000 to RAL3033 and Green hues from RAL6000 to RAL6038.
