As we enter the mid-year period, the global steel coil market continues to experience divergent trends across regions. From stabilizing prices in China to cautious buying in Southeast Asia, here’s a summary of the major developments during the week of May 26–June 1, 2025:
Chinese steel mills showed slight resilience this week, with galvanized coil (GI) and pre-painted galvanized coil (PPGI) prices stabilizing after weeks of decline. Export activity picked up modestly as exporters offered competitive prices to maintain overseas market share, especially in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
The Indian market saw mixed signals. Domestic demand weakened slightly due to monsoon-related slowdowns, but importers remained active, especially for GI coils used in construction and automotive applications. Price-sensitive buyers focused on short-term deals as exchange rate volatility added uncertainty.
Markets in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia showed cautious interest in galvanized and color-coated coils. Buyers are comparing offers from Chinese and Indian mills, with a preference for lower zinc coating and thinner specifications.
