5 Considerations for Selecting a video wall processor

The video wall processor acts as the “brain” of your display wall system. A processor’s role is to take your multiple sources, scale them, and route them to the video displays.

Processors allow you to choose how to display your sources, whether you want multiple pieces of content on a single display or a single piece of content stretched across multiple displays.

When choosing the right processor for your video wall system, there are a lot of factors to take into account.  The following are some of the main points to consider.

1. Scale and size

The size and complexity of your room/display walls and the complexity needed from your processor will determine the best solution.

Will you place your operations in a small, medium, or large room? What is the quantity of inputs and outputs you will need?

2. Types of sources

The types of sources you need to display will also affect the right processor choice for your solution. The number of different sources a processor can display at one time varies, as does the ability to display streamed content or other  kinds of sources.

As you plan your video wall, ask yourself what your sources will be: are they primarily physical sources like pcs and cable tuners? Will you use web content  displayed natively in a browser, or cloud-based software?

The video wall processor you choose should be able to display from all of these various sources at once across the surface of the video wall.

3. Level of redundancy

In mission critical, 24/7 environments, you need to be able to keep your system operational in case of any equipment failures. Processors for these applications should have redundant, hot-swappable power supplies so the system can remain running and replacements can be made without removing the processor from the rack.

Mission critical processors, like all components of your video wall system, should be selected with an eye toward minimizing downtime. An integrator can help you determine the level of redundancy you need in the system, determine the best products, and incorporate it into the overall system design.

4. Options for control

When it comes to controlling the display of your video wall, an intuitive user interface is key. Operators should be able to change source destinations, resize content, and recall presets from a single interface.

Having simple controls proves beneficial when operators must quickly configure the display for a training exercise, escalation of events, or an operations center tour.

Some processors come with control systems built in, but for others you may need to add a third party control system. One isn’t necessarily better than the other, but it’s important to keep in mind what level of control your processor includes as you design your video wall system.

5. Functionality vs price: finding the right fit

All of the above considerations will be weighed against price when your integrator considers processor options for your video wall system. As with most things, the size of the processor and its capabilities are factors in pricing. Every room has different requirements and while there is no “one size fits all” solution, many platforms are modular and scalable for future growth. An integrator like Constant can help you find the right balance between the capabilities you need and the budget you have to stick to.

Choosing an Integrator

Working with a mission critical expert is key to having a successful integration.

Proven experience is the best indicator of expertise. Constant’s client list speaks for itself. Our work with firms like CVSHealth, Meta, Lockheed Martin, and more as well as with government agencies such as the Department of Defense, United States Coast Guard and Air Force proves that we are widely trusted with the most sensitive and vital environments.

With a project as important as an operations center, you can’t afford to make mistakes with your technology partners. There are a lot of AV integrators out there, but no one else has specialized exclusively in the field of mission critical — just Constant.
