Galvanizing has been around for a very long time, and with good reason – it’s extremely effective. By coating plain carbon steel with a barrier of zinc, a piece of otherwise vulnerable metal becomes resistant to corrosion from the elements forever. The barrier of zinc corrodes over time, forming a protective layer for the steel underneath. Galvanizing is characterized by a spangled look, which eventually changes to a white oxide appearance as air and elements affect the finish.
Galvanized Corrugated metal is the most common material for metal roofing and siding. Though its appearance will not hold up as well as a Galvalume finish, galvanized metal will still offer the underlying protection that steel needs to withstand rugged outdoor applications. The two main coating thicknesses for Galvanized steel are G-60 and G-90; the number refers to the amount of zinc on both sides of the panel. The G-90 is typically used for a bare Galvanized panel. The G-60 is used for painted galvanized panels.
