How do I choose Jewellery for a gift?

08 Apr.,2024

Are you style challenged? Or do you just lack some confidence about how to choose gifts for women? How do you pick perfect presents for the women in your life? You're not alone: it's not always easy to know where to start.

Never fear: we can help you find perfect gifts for your wife, girlfriend, daughter, mother or friend with our 6 step gift giving guide. Also take a look at our guide to selecting timeless jewellery gifts for her.

Let's dive in ...

1. What does she wear?

If possible (and without being creepy, of course) try to sneak a look at her jewellery collection when she's not around to see what she has in her stash. This is a great way to get an idea of what she likes to wear.

Ask yourself some questions about what you see:

  • Are her jewellery pieces generally small and subtle? Or larger and intended to be eye-catching?
  • Does she prefer silver jewellery or gold jewellery? Or a mixture?
  • Do you see her wearing coloured jewellery or just plain metal jewellery pieces?
  • If her jewellery is colourful, is there a dominant colour or type?
  • Is there a colour or type of gemstone jewellery she favours?
  • Does she have a preferred design theme, for example: flowers, geometric designs, minimalist forms, hearts or flourishes?
  • Do you think she has a preference for wearing a particular type of jewellery: necklaces, earrings or rings?
  • What specific styles of jewellery does she favour: dangle earrings or stud earrings, chain necklaces or necklaces with pendants, simple stacking rings or bigger cocktail rings?

2. What type of person is she?

You'll also find it helpful just to think about the type of person she is when you're choosing a gift:

  • Is she unlikely to buy anything special for herself? Can you make up for this?
  • Is she outgoing and enjoys attention, or the opposite?
  • Is she sentimental and does she like sentimental gifts, such as birthstone jewellery or other meaningful jewellery pieces?
  • Does she like dressing up to go out?
  • Would she enjoy a piece of bolder statement jewellery to wear for special occasions?

3. What does she do?

Another thing to consider is what activities your gift recipient does day-to-day:

  • Does she work in a job where she needs to look smart or more casual?
  • Is she able to wear jewellery day-in, day-out, or only when going out socially?
  • How often does she go out? Special occasions only or more regularly?
  • Does she have small children which might make regularly wearing long necklaces or dangly earrings difficult?
  • Are there any special occasions coming up which she's likely to dress up for?
  • Does she like to wear everyday jewellery and could do with more variety in her wardrobe basics?

4. Phone a friend

It's a really great idea to ask one of her friends or close family members what they think she might like:

  • Has she mentioned any particular items she's been thinking about getting lately?
  • What do they think about any gifts you currently have in mind?
  • Do they have any clues as to her preferred types of jewellery, ring size, colours, etc.?

5. Got some ideas: now what?

Hopefully answering some of these questions has given you a good starting point to figure out what you'd like to get for your gift recipient.

Jewellery makes for the perfect gift and often goes on to become a treasured piece in a collection. Whether you’re looking to say ‘Happy Birthday’, ‘Merry Christmas’ or just an ‘I love you’, a ring or a piece of jewellery is a timeless way to do just that.

When it comes to picking a special gift, it can be overwhelming at first... If you’re not sure where to start your jewellery search, or just need some advice on what to look out for, we have pulled together some of our most useful advice to make the process as joyful and stress-free as possible (because it should be).

Here are 9 questions you should ask yourself when gifting someone special a piece of gorgeous hand-picked jewellery:

1. What kind of jewellery do they already wear?

The first thing you should think about is what kind of jewellery the lucky gift recipient already wears. Big and bold or intricate detail? Delicate sparkle or chunky metal? Gold or silver? Are they a necklace or a ring person?

As with any gift, the overall aim is to get something they'll love and cherish. So, it’s important to think about their general style and the jewellery they typically wear. And if you’re unsure, why not ask for some help from a friend or family member who knows them well!

It's always handy to take screenshots or photographs of the jewellery they already wear. Bring this along to your Fenton appointment, or share it with us via email and our sales experts will be able to make recommendations tailored to you.

Top Tip: Have a scroll through their Instagram or Facebook and try and spot their most-worn jewellery pieces.

2. Which colours do they love?

Here is where you can really start to whittle it down. You have the general style of ring they will like - now let's hone in on the colour!

There are many options to choose from, but most people will find themselves some way inclined. Some prefer more classic colours, like Blue Sapphire, Emerald and Aquamarine, whereas others love the brighter hues of Pink and Yellow Sapphire. Another great choice are the fiery red tone of the Ruby or Garnet

Skin colour, hair colour, and general fashion choices will all have a role to play here, so have a think and go with your gut!

3. Is there a particular meaning to your gift?

It isn’t just colour that plays a role when choosing a gemstone. Each stone also comes with its own incredible set of meanings. For example, Blue Sapphires are known to entice hope and harmony whereas Aquamarines stand for protection and fearlessness. Rubies are known to bring passion and wisdom to their wearer.

Next to this, if you are gifting for a birthday in particular, thinking about the birthstone is a really special and personal way you can decide on your gift. For someone born in January choose a Garnet or if their birthday falls into May, Emeralds are the perfect choice.

4. Are you looking for a durable piece or something delicate for special occasions?

This one's quite a clincher. Different gemstones have different properties and are more ‘forgiving’ when it comes to daily and hands-on wear, so it’s important to know which one will work best for them.

For example, Emeralds are slightly more brittle than Sapphires, meaning they are more prone to chipping. If the recipient has been known to break a few glasses in their time, consider a slightly more durable gemstone, like a Sapphire or Ruby

For the clumsier ones amongst us, we would also recommend exploring a bezel setting (vs the traditional claw setting). The metal casing around the gemstone offers a little bit of extra protection.

Whereas if they are more of a delicate person who is looking to wear their jewellery piece less regularly - then an Emerald or Aquamarine may be the way to go. Consider opting for a design with some accent diamonds to really make your gemstone pop!

5. What does my instinct say?

Go with your gut... often we find people have more or less of an idea of what their gift recipient will want.

Our expert concierges will obviously always be on hand to provide some additional guidance, and ask you the right questions to help you make the perfect choice..but time and time again we see instinct playing a huge role in giftings choice - so don't be scared to listen to your inner voice - you might find you hit the jackpot.

6. Size matters?

If you're shopping for a ring - it’s best to try and find out their ring size. Whether for an engagement, birthday, anniversary, graduation or promotion, you’re going to want to make sure it fits!

If you need a little help with this you can check out our guide to measuring their ring size at home, or request a complimentary ring sizer to be sent out to you.

And finally, don’t panic too much - if you buy your ring from Fenton, we offer the 1st resizing as complimentary, so it’s not the end of the world if you get it wrong.

7. What is the returns policy?

As with any gift, there is always a small risk that they may not love the piece you’ve chosen. So just in case they want to make an exchange, make sure you know the returns policy of where you're buying from.

At Fenton, we offer a flexible 60 day returns or exchange policy, so long as your piece is in unworn and in perfect condition. This should give you that extra bit of reassurance when buying jewellery as a gift.

8. Can I get this gift-wrapped?

And finally - the packaging. If you live with your lucky gift recipient, this is definitely something you’re going to want to think about - you don’t want them to clock on too soon. Likewise if you're posting the gift to someone, you don't want to ruin the surprise before they have the opportunity to open it.

As such, it’s worth checking with the jeweller how they send out their orders, and if the outside of the packaging is branded. At Fenton, all of our orders are shipped in boxes which are plain externally, and beautifully gift wrapped on the inside.

Time to shop!

Now you’re all clued up, it’s time to get shopping. If you’re looking for a ring you can start creating here. Or if you’re thinking of opting for earrings, a necklace or bracelet you should check out our Bespoke offering.
