Flats or Trays

If you'd prefer to start your seeds in flats or trays, we have a number of reliable favorites to recommend. Perma-Nest Plant Trays are endlessly re-usable, sturdy, lightweight, and easy to clean. You can use them indoors or out, and they come in 3 sizes (all 2½ inches high):

Jiffies are also very dependable and come in a huge assortment of sizes. Square pots are available in 2-inch, 2 1/4-inch, and 3-inch sizes, as well as a strip of a dozen 2 1/4-inch pots molded together for easy transport! Round pots are 3 inches in diameter. You can set these pots into a tray -- Perma-Nests work well! -- to provide bottom watering; the moisture will wick up directly through the base of the peat moss pots, encouraging the roots to grow down and keeping water away from the leaves of the seedlings.

If you want the climate control of a dome around your seedlings, consider Park's Trays and Inserts. This is the system many professional growers use, because the trays and inserts (the individual square cells you fill with soil) are re-usable for several seasons, and the clear plastic humidity dome keeps moisture and heat in, drafts out. And the tray is grooved so that water doesn't pool beneath any of the inserts. We offer 3 sizes:

Whichever flat, tray, or pot size you choose, be sure to use only a premium grow mix for your seeds. We have a terrific new Seed-Starting Mix this season -- a tremendous improvement over older formulas! It's the same blend that the professionals use, and it's made fresh. To use it, just add a little lukewarm water to the mix and work it in well with your hands, then fill the seed flat or tray and smooth out the surface before sowing the seeds. You can also use it with larger pots, and it's the perfect medium for rooting cuttings!
