Commercial vehicles have improved a lot over the years. One of the most beneficial improvements in the user's health perspective, has evolved around the seat. In the past, drivers of heavy-duty commercial vehicles used to experience painful vibrations in their spine and other parts of their body, whenever travelling across rough terrain. Nowadays, thanks to modern technology, different seating suspension methods allow a smooth ride that maintains the operator's body healthy.

Generally, seat suspension systems use either air or mechanical suspension. Both air and mechanical suspension seats have their own unique benefits, which I've listed below to help you identify the right seat for your needs.

Benefits of Mechanical Suspension Seats

With mechanical suspension seats, coil springs and shock absorbers are connected to articulating joints to help provide cushioning across rough terrain. This type of suspension resembles the suspension system often used under a passenger vehicle. One great thing about this suspension system is it can be adjusted according to the operator's needs. However, its main benefit is its simplicity. Mechanical suspension systems are a lot easier to fix than air, both in terms of determining the problem and fixing it. Furthermore, mechanical suspension seats are a lot more cost-effective, which is a serious concern if you are outfitting a large commercial fleet instead of a couple of vehicles.

Benefits of Air Suspension Seats

Seats that feature an air suspension system are usually significantly more costly than mechanical systems, but some users will tell you that they are a better investment. Air suspension seats use a pneumatic system to cushion against shocks and vibrations. This means that they can be adjusted faster to ensure the best possible fit with both the body size and the shape of the operator and the purpose of the vehicle. Making adjustments with these seats is easier and more precise as you simply have to vary air pressure. With springs, the pneumatic system maintains constant pressure no matter their setting.

Generally, air suspension seats can support slightly more weight. But still, their biggest advantage is probably that they are more comfortable than mechanical systems. If the vehicle is only going to be driven for short periods of time, this isn't much of a big deal. But if your vehicle is going to be driven across significant distance, this factor becomes more important.

Keeping these things in mind should help you select the most appropriate suspension seat for your vehicle. Feel free to contact suppliers for additional information in case you have any questions that may affect your final decision.
